Direct answer

Start with belt and material mass per unit length, idler spacing, roll arrangement, speed and the relevant duty. Separate the load on the complete set from the load on each roll. Loading-zone impact, curves, transitions and other special conditions require their own assessment; a uniform gravity-load calculation is only a starting case.

What is an idler on a conveyor?

An idler supports the moving belt through freely rotating rolls. A carrying set may contain several rolls that form a trough; a return arrangement supports the returning belt. The frame, shell, shaft, bearings and seals all belong in a component specification.

For a simplified straight, horizontal carrying run with uniform steady material flow and evenly spaced idler sets, estimate the gravity load associated with one spacing from line mass and spacing. The calculation below is an original dimensional example, not a manufacturer selection formula.

How to calculate belt conveyor load?

That 1.22 kN represents a simplified gravity load for one complete set. It is not the center roll's load rating, an allowable load or a final design load. Select individual rolls using the applicable manufacturer's current method, the actual belt/material geometry and the required duty.

Inputs beyond the simple gravity example
ConditionInformation neededWhy the simple example is incomplete
Individual rollTrough geometry, roll lengths and load distributionThe set load is not necessarily divided equally
Impact loadingMaterial size, drop conditions and receiving arrangementA steady mass-flow value does not define impact duty
Curve or transitionBelt tensions, path and local geometryBelt forces can add to gravity loads
Bearing dutySpeed, operating hours and service conditionsStatic supported weight does not specify bearing life
Shell and shaftSpan, dimensions, materials and applicable criteriaA roll is an assembly with several possible limits

How should three-roll and five-roll idler arrangements be compared for belt life and reliability?

Compare arrangements for the same belt, material, duty and geometry. Review each roll's load, belt support, access for maintenance and the supplier's application requirements. A larger roll count by itself does not establish longer belt life or lower whole-life cost.

The Belt Conveyor Design course includes component selection and idlers. Conveyor Maven's product page describes its released calculators; this guide does not claim that the current app performs a complete carrying/impact-idler selection or shell design.
